We celebrated 2017 in a hotel near lake Kawaguchi. A little town near Mt. Fuji have long become a favourite place for relaxation.
Even in the last evening of the year there was no crowd on station. Just some tourists, as usual; mostly from Asian countries.
We have booked Koryu Hotel. When checking in, the included breakfast came as a nice surprise. With breakfast, and for a special night, the price was quite a bargain.
It was warm inside. But that doesn’t mean avoiding kotatsu! By the way, it was a bit unusual here, with a pit in the floor under the table to put your legs into. And the heater was under this hollow, not under the tabletop, as I used to see before.
The sweets to the tea are popular locally: two very thin fine cake layers with something like fruit jelly in between. Delicious!
There are dining halls on the first floor; most are traditional with tatami, but there’s a Western one, too.
The New Year’s eve dinner.
We stayed in our room watching the old year go; and in fact, we slightly missed the New Year. Around half past 11 we went deep into a discussion of how low-quality medical care and people who provide it can be dealt with; and only came to from that important talking at 00:12. Those wines from South Crimea have an attitude, you know.
We’ve had breakfast ordered for 8:30. I don’t really like breakfasts in traditional Japanese hotels because they always are too early and too ample for me. I don’t eat that much even for lunch. And on top of that we were offered a shot of special New Year sake – in the morning! With that, Russians are still known for drunkards?
Unfortunately, most of my breakfast was a waste. But some things were quite tasty. In particular, there was a dried persimmon, and it was awesome! And of course, the serving was a feast for the eye!
Some pickles out of mentaiko (pollock roe), broccoli, carrot and bamboo root.
The soup turned out very fatty and obviously on meat stock. Surely a good thing for those who eats meat and consumed too much alcohol the night before.
After checking out we went for a walk around the lake. It was fabulously beautiful, and the weather helped a lot!
I hope that you’ve had a great New Year eve too. Wish you all lots of great things and happiness in 2017!
